PicoWay vs. Q-Switched Lasers

Unthink Inc • April 16, 2021

The PicoWay laser tattoo removal machine is an advanced, FDA approved tattoo removal system developed by global medical aesthetic device leader Syneron Candela. Compared to the traditional Q-switched laser, PicoWay is able to eliminate tattoos faster, with minimized risk and maximized results. A recent Syneron Candela report states 81 percent of people who’ve used PicoWay are more likely to get another new tattoo purely due to understanding the ease of the removal technology.

PicoWay vs. Q-Switched Lasers

Laser Tattoo Removal Technology

Both lasers use focused beams of pulsating light to target and shatter ink particles. These pieces are then absorbed into the body. The main difference between the two lasers is the speed in which they deliver the energies to the ink. A traditional Q-switched laser uses nanosecond technology, which delivers light pulses to the targeted area in measurements of nanoseconds — one billionth of a second. Although this may seem extremely fast, for this type of technology it is actually quite slow. In comparison, PicoWay uses picosecond technology , which delivers pulses to the targeted area in measurements of picoseconds — one trillionth of a second.

PicoWay vs. Q-Switched Lasers

Laser Tattoo Removal Speed

As the Q-switched laser works at a slower speed, it is unable to break up the ink particles into as small of pieces as the PicoWay heat accumulates with the slower speed. For tattoo removal to work effectively, pieces need to be small so they can absorb into the skin and depose through natural processes. PicoWay’s ability to shatter pigment into thinner pieces from the very first application allows for fewer necessary treatment sessions. Clients get faster results, less discomfort, and minimized risk. Q-switched lasers also use photothermal technology, which causes a serious amount of heat and can lead to burns or blisters.

PicoWay vs. Q-Switched Lasers

Laser Tattoo Removal Colours

PicoWay operates at three different wavelengths for more optimal results: 532nm, 785nm and 1064nm. These wavelengths allow PicoWay to treat a wider variety of tattoo colours and skin tones. In the past, it was hard to eliminate colours like blue and yellow with a Q-switched laser. Since it only works at one wavelength. With PicoWay, a multitude of colours can be treated all with the same device, during the same appointment. This feature also makes PicoWay laser tattoo removal a much safer option for those with darker skin tones! The laser energy is delivered in such short, targeted bursts that do not harm the surrounding skin.

PicoWay vs. Q-Switched Lasers

Laser Tattoo Removal Downtime

The most notable difference between the two tattoo removal technologies is the timeline. With Q-switched lasers, it would take approximately 12 to 15 painful sessions to have a tattoo removed. With PicoWay’s advanced capabilities,  the same tattoo would only take about five to seven comfortable sessions. Considering the required four to eight weeks in between each session (to allow the skin to heal). Additional treatment sessions increase total treatment time significantly with the Q-switched laser. When choosing PicoWay for your tattoo removal needs , you can achieve un-inked skin up to a year earlier than you would with a traditional Q-switched laser.

At Unthink Inc., I trust and use the advanced PicoWay system on clients every day. Book your free consultation to meet with Jim Trenholm , and learn more about this advanced technology.
