Both lasers use focused beams of pulsating light to target and shatter ink particles. These pieces are then absorbed into the body. The main difference between the two lasers is the speed in which they deliver the energies to the ink. A traditional Q-switched laser uses nanosecond technology, which delivers light pulses to the targeted area in measurements of nanoseconds — one billionth of a second. Although this may seem extremely fast, for this type of technology it is actually quite slow. In comparison, PicoWay uses picosecond technology , which delivers pulses to the targeted area in measurements of picoseconds — one trillionth of a second.

As the Q-switched laser works at a slower speed, it is unable to break up the ink particles into as small of pieces as the PicoWay heat accumulates with the slower speed. For tattoo removal to work effectively, pieces need to be small so they can absorb into the skin and depose through natural processes.
